What is a backfeed

Post by AXIA_milos »

"Backfeed" is a term used to describe a return audio source. For example, a phone hybrid typically would be fed a mix-minus. This mix-minus is return audio, or a "backfeed". Also, you could have an independent headphone feed for microphone positions. This is also known as a "backfeed". So, the Element studio is designed to provide backfeeds to any source that is configured as a Phone, Codec, CR (Control Room) Guest, CR Producer, or Studio Guest. These are options in a source profile... what sort of logic is being associated with this source.

Phone and codec source type options in a Source Profile will cause the DSP Engine to produce a backfeed that is a mix-minus.

CR Guest, CR Producer, or Studio Guest source type options in a Source Profile will cause the DSP Engine to produce a backfeed that is intended to be a headphone feed (not a mix-minus).

These *backfeeds* are what I call Dynamic sources. They are generated *on the fly* by the DSP Engine when the source is loaded to a fader (and it is the only Surface that has the source loaded). So when the source is removed from a fader, the backfeed is also removed from the network. Thus why I call them *Dynamic*.

Also in the source profile is the option to disable the backfeed. This is an option. This option only applies if the source type was defined as one of the options mentioned.
